The NBA Expansion that Could Happen

The NBA has been surrounded with expansion rumors for years now, and it may finally come true. 

Adam Silver said he hopes to get an expansion plan done by the end of 2026. The two cities that are heavily favored to have teams are Seattle and Las Vegas. 

The city of Seattle has been hungry for another team since the SuperSonics left back in 2008. They later became the Oklahoma City Thunder, and it worked out for them pretty well. 

It’s not the same when the team isn’t in your city anymore though, and the fans haven’t been quiet about it. It would be amazing for the sport if the Sonics are brought back to Seattle. 

As for Vegas, they’ve just been racking up professional sports teams over the past decade. 

They’ve brought on the NFL’s Raiders, WNBA’s Aces, and the NHL’s Golden Knights. The city also plans to bring on the MLB’s Athletics, which will create one of the busiest sports cities in America.

An expansion will shake the league up, which means a team from the West will have to move to the Eastern Conference. 

The Minnesota Timberwolves are the frontrunner to move to the East, which will make the stacked conference even tougher. 

An expansion draft could happen as soon as summer 2028, but details are still being worked out by Adam Silver and the board.
